Indian Broad Gauge Steam RememberedIndian Broad Gauge Steam Remembered

by Lawrence G Marshall

Following his popular books covering the Indian narrow gauge and meter gauge, this book describes and illustrates his travels and experiences on the Indian broad gauge. A substantial number of designs are illustrated in colour and monochrome, and many British builders’ products are illustrated. The book also covers broad gauge industrial railways where, again, British-built locomotives feature strongly. A considerable number of these pictures were taken during his eight group visits to India, and no effort was spared by Indian Railways to help with unusual requests as the pictures show from time to time.

With steam traction just a memory on the Indian broad gauge, this book forms a fitting tribute to the great days of steam locomotives running on wider tracks. Included in the book are full details of the broad gauge locomotives that worked on the nine zonal railways, plus lists of all the Indian Railway designs from the IRS period onwards. The book also features a map showing all the broad gauge depots and several pen and ink drawings created by his son Alan, who also designed the book. For purposes of comparison some interesting archive pictures also appear in the book along with some original manufacturers illustrations and a chapter devoted to ‘Engines for Export’.
